Overview:

This course provides basic understanding of mobile communication system engineering. In a mobile communication system there are multiple users communicating with a base station, a radio access network consisting of multiple base stations providing continuous coverage over extended areas, and 'a core network combining radio access network to guarantee the services required by the mobile user. Principles of sharing the radio resources of a base station between users, managing and planning the usage of radio resources between base stations, managing the mobility of users between base stations and networks are needed. In this course we concentrate on these issues, assuming that the fundamental principles of digital information transmission over a radio link are known.

Standardization is an essential part in creating mobile communication. In this course, an overview of the GSM and 3G WCDMA standards are given. The trends driving evolution towards 4th generation mobile communication systems are also discussed.

After the course, the student understands the basic components and functionalities of a cellular communication system. He understands the fundamental tradeoff between co-channel interference and resource usage efficiency in a multi-cellular system, and some basic principles to address this. He is familiar with the channel structure, radio resource management and mobility management principles of GSM and WCDMA.
